“..Blur: the reunion of 2009..”
“..One comment sums up the key music event of 2009 more effectively than anything else said or written about the subject, and, fittingly, it comes from the mouth of Damon Albarn.
Talking about the album-by-album rehearsals Blur had undertaken at the beginning of this year in preparation for their reunion concerts — the band’s first together since 1999 — the singer reflected on how, at last, “the music stood on its own merits, without the rubbish that came with it.
Fashion and hype can distort things massively when it comes to shaping your view”.
When, 12 months ago, he and Blur’s long-estranged guitarist, Graham Coxon, announced the first of the band’s comeback gigs for summer 2009, hype was not, of course, in short supply.
On the contrary.
That show, in London’s Hyde Park on July 3, sold out, literally, in two minutes.
“The first shuddering moment,” says the band’s affable bassist, Alex James, “was when we put those tickets on sale, and they sold out in seconds.
It was one of those ‘whoosh’ moments, but it was totally a punt; we just didn’t know.
It’s funny, I don’t think we could ever have sold Hyde Park out when we were originally together.
But it was as if the legend had grown .. and it was a heart-stopping moment.”
