..and is current affairs television at its’ very best..
..it is last nights’ episode of (the usually excellent and always at the very least ‘useful’) ‘native affairs’..
..and it is required viewing for those who claim ‘there is no real poverty in new zealand’..
..it details how/where the poorest people/families are forced to live..
..cheek by jowl in the squalor of a west auckland caravan park..
..that is potent/powerful enough..
..then prepare to be dismayed at the subsequent interview with the housing minister heatley..
..hear him confirm how this govt plans to do nothing more to relieve this unconscionable fact of life in new zealand in 2012..
..it is also worth noting that this hell-hole in west auckland did not spring into being at the rise of the key-regime..
..during those ‘good-years’ of the clark-regime ..when they studiously ignored the poorest..’working for (some) families’ eh..?..and where for nine long years they did nothing to undo the evils wrought by richardson..
..during those clark-years i skirted close to being officially homeless at one stage..and was caravan-park crawling around auckland
..and one night i drove in there..without having ever seen/heard of the place before..
..and i can confirm it was a shock..that same relentless squalor/misery detailed in the ‘native affairs’ piece…
..they have not just picked out the worst bits..
..i fled..
..so clark/key and all those both labour and national pollies stretching back to the neo-lib revolution/mother-of-all-budgets of richardson..and douglas/prebble etc..
..they all share responsibilities for what new zealand has become for so/too many..
…and this wake-up/clarion-call for the ignorant/complacent citizens..and the politicians..
..surely must stir some calls for urgent action/infrastructure/low-cost-housing building..
..you’d think..?
