“…The Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry is spending $9.2 million on a 30-strong razor gang which is supposed to save it $25m a year.
It has also confirmed that a member of the senior management team listed on its website is actually working for it as a contractor and is based in Singapore.
Foreign Minister Murray McCully told Parliament yesterday that MFAT had 30 people working in its “change programme office”, including consultants and permanent staff – and said the ministry was also contracting services from “a range of external consultancy firms”.
“The cost of all three of these categories in the current year is $9.2 million.”
The cost of the consultants is likely to add fuel to a revolt over MFAT’s radical restructuring plans -
- as 49 of New Zealand’s top diplomats, including political appointee and former National MP John Carter, put their names to a letter warning against spending cuts.
Labour MP Phil Goff also revealed yesterday that among the consultants MFAT employed was “a man in Singapore” being paid $250,000 to come to New Zealand once every six weeks…”
