“…Secondary Principals’ Association of New Zealand president Patrick Walsh said social media sites were an online “wild west” for teenagers.

“It’s causing huge amounts of harm,” he said.

“The effects range from students losing sleep, to loss of appetite, through to self harm and suicide.”

Mr Walsh supported the call for legislation to govern online communications, and said offenders should be punished.

“Unfortunately it’s something that isn’t going to go away and needs some form of regulation.”..”
