“..While the Kiwi dream remains a picturesque weatherboard house with a garden for the kids – prices are so high in many cities – notably Auckland -

- that that dream comes with a very large mortgage -

- or is simply beyond the reach of many.

But later this month, according to a well-placed source, the Government will unveil its response to the Productivity Commission’s recommendation that land be freed for development of housing -

- most notably in Auckland and Christchurch in order to create a boom in affordable houses..”

  1. John W says:

Housing is said to be driven by population growth. In some respects a myth if that is the only factor considered.

Population growth for business expansion and multinational profit is what we see here in NZ.
The world population is beyond any concept of sustainability and each country with excess population that strains their ability to be self sufficient, needs to do something about the breeding programme, not export the excess consumers.

Eating up more green space for developer profit, supply chains owned by transnational investors with excess money, stretching infrastructure and loading local rates and removing environmental capital for future generations – is a path of “progress” based on a short term focussed tunnel view.

Meanwhile many small towns have empty houses because their economies have been destroyed by closure of facilites or services.
