“…Turei Calls For Cross Party Accord To Beat Child Poverty…”

“…Children should benefit from a cross-party political consensus just as the elderly do, the Green Party says.

In a speech to the party’s annual conference today, Greens co-leader Metiria Turei called for a cross-party accord on alleviating child poverty.

The informal accord that kept universal superannuation in place had been effective at cutting poverty among the elderly and a similar approach should apply for children, who had growing rates of poverty.

“For hundreds of thousands of our littlest people, Aotearoa is empty of the hope that the rest of us base our dreams on,” Turei said.

“We must put aside our political differences.

We must work to devise a cross party consensus to raise our children out of poverty –

- in a similar way we all reached an accord over superannuation.”..”
