“… Study: Vegetarians are more upbeat than meat-eaters …”

Friday, June 11th, 2010

“…The physical health status of vegetarians has been extensively reported …

… but there is limited research regarding the mental health status of vegetarians ..

… particularly with regard to mood.

Vegetarian diets exclude fish, the major dietary source of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) …

… critical regulators of brain cell structure and function.

Omnivorous diets low in EPA and DHA are linked to impaired mood states in observational and experimental studies.

Methods: We examined associations between mood state and polyunsaturated fatty acid intake …

… as a result of adherence to a vegetarian or omnivorous diet…”

“…The Medical University of South Carolina Mutilates Pigs…”

Friday, June 11th, 2010

“…A recent PETA investigation prompted the U.S. Department of Agriculture to cite laboratories at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) for violations of federal animal welfare laws …

… and revealed that MUSC continues to cut holes in the throats and chests of live pigs in a cruel and deadly trauma training exercise …

… even though the university has replaced animal use with a state-of-the-art TraumaMan simulator to teach the very same skills in it’s Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course.

Comparative studies by leading trauma surgeons have repeatedly found that the use of TraumaMan—in addition to saving animals’ lives—

- is superior to the use of animal labs for preparing trainees to treat injuries in human patients.

TraumaMan and other simulators are endorsed by the American College of Surgeons …

… and are used instead of animals in 95 percent of ATLS courses across the U.S…”

“…Life in the raw…”

Friday, June 11th, 2010

“… Karen Brown’s morning ritual involves stuffing spinach, kale, dandelions and fruit into a blender … a concoction she swears is delicious.

When you first start, make it 60 per cent fruit - it makes it more palatable, she says.

Brown has followed a 95 per cent raw food diet for about three years and says the green smoothies are a mainstay of her daily menu.

Two years ago, she founded the Christchurch raw vegan group, and has since seen the diet gain momentum in the city.

There are more than 100 names on the mailing list and her regular potluck dinners are popular social events for the diverse, all-ages group.

The raw food philosophy is built around the notion that food loses a lot of nutrients and enzymes during the cooking process …

… and that fresh, raw fruits and vegetables carry the highest benefits for health.

Raw foodists believe uncooked food is easier for the body to process … and that nothing should be heated above 45 degrees Celsius.

The ancient diet had a wave of popularity in the 1930s and has grown in popularity again since the 1980s.

The diet is now particularly popular in the United States … with numerous Californian restaurants dedicated to providing only uncooked food.

Brown was vegetarian and dairy- free for 20 years before going raw, which she believes helped with the transition.

However, the radical change took careful consideration.

“It was a big plunge. I really didn’t like the thought of not having a cooked meal at night-time.”

Many people choose to follow a partially raw diet, rather than Brown’s all-or-nothing approach.

Either way, she recommends easing into it to allow the body time to adjust, rather than going cold turkey.

“There is a detox period where you will feel tired for a few days at the start.

After that, your energy levels go through the roof.”

The main benefits for Brown are her abundance of energy and increased mental clarity.

She speaks of feeling lighter, and no longer experiences the sensation of food sitting heavily in the pit of the stomach.

She rarely gets sick and cannot remember the last time she had a cold.

“The Western diet makes you sick.

Illnesses are ultimately a result of the way we live.”

I’ve always found food diaries to be oddly compelling … and Moby’s self-deprecating tone plays off nicely against his simple but satisfying meals.

“…The Truth About Red and Processed Meats…”

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

“… the meta-analysis assessed over a million people.

So its findings are worthy of consideration … even if they come encumbered by caveats.

The study suggests that when isolated from processed meat, pure red meat has no meaningful association with heart disease risk.

Total meat intake was, the authors state, “associated with a trend toward higher [heart disease] risk.”

Each daily serving of processed meat raised the apparent risk of heart disease by a relative 40 percent.

Each serving of total meat per day … was linked to a 12 percent rise in the apparent relative risk of diabetes…”

Peter Singer:..”…Religion’s regressive hold on animal rights issues…”

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

“…How are we to promote the need for improved animal welfare … when battling religious views formed centuries ago?..

Last week, the chief minister of Malacca, Mohamad Ali Rustam, was quoted in the Guardian as saying that God created monkeys and rats for experiments to benefit humans.

Activists had been protesting against his approval of an Indian company’s proposal to build an animal research laboratory in his state.

They said that Malaysia has no regulations to protect animals in laboratories.

His answer was the reference to God’s purpose in creating animals.

If it were not for the dire consequences for the animals who will suffer in the laboratory … the chief minister’s remark would be hilarious.

Here is the head of a Malaysian state justifying the establishment of a scientific enterprise with a comment that flies in the face of everything science tells us.

The belief that the animals exist because God created them – and that he created them so we can better meet our needs –

– is contrary to our scientific understanding of evolution and … of course, to the fossil record …

… which shows the existence of non-human primates and other animals millions of years before there were any human beings at all.

Though the chief minister is, presumably, a Muslim, there is nothing specifically Islamic about the claim that God created animals for our sake.

Similar remarks have been made repeatedly by Christian religious figures through the millennia …

… although today some Christian theologians offer a kinder, more compassionate interpretation of the idea of our God-given dominion over the animals.

They regard the grant of dominion as a kind of stewardship …

… with God wanting us to take care of his creatures … and treat them well…”

“… Japanese cinemas drop dolphin slaughter film … ”

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

“…Cinemas in Japan have cancelled plans to show an Oscar-winning film about the country’s annual slaughter of thousands of dolphins after far-right campaigners threatened to disrupt the screenings.

Unplugged, the Japanese distributor of The Cove, said three cinemas had cancelled screenings amid fears they would be disrupted by ultra-nationalists…

… who have denounced the film as “anti-Japanese”.

Named best documentary feature at this year’s Oscars, The Cove struggled to find a distributor in Japan following protests by Taiji fishermen …

… who complained that it contained inaccuracies and that they had been filmed without permission.

In an attempt to placate opponents, Unplugged blurred the faces of dolphin hunters in the Japanese version, which is due for domestic release on 26 June.

But threats of noisy street protests and unspecified “acts of sabotage” prompted two cinemas in Tokyo and one in Osaka to cancel the screenings.

The cinemas had received a flood of angry phone calls from ultra-rightwing activists … who also demonstrated outside Unplugged’s Tokyo office.

“The work intentionally distorts Japanese people’s food culture, and showing this will hurt many people’s feelings,” one of the protest groups, the Society to Seek the Restoration of Sovereignty, said.

The move could force 23 other cinemas around the country to reconsider plans to show the film this summer…”

“…Fake Meat: Scientists Closer To Vegetarian Chicken…”

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

“…Time magazine reports on a team of scientists from the University of Missouri who may have finally cracked the code on vegetarian chicken.

Though fake-meat products like Tofurkey (and many more — see photos of various fake meat products here) have been available for years …

… emulating the subtle, fibrous texture and taste profile of chicken is particularly difficult.

But scientist Fu-Hung Hsieh and his partner Harold Huff have developed a complex formula to overcome chicken’s peculiar challenges.

According to Time, after more than a decade, they have created:

“The first soy product that not only can be flavored to taste like chicken … but also breaks apart in your mouth the way chicken does: …

… not too soft, not too hard, but with that ineffable chew of real flesh.

When you pull apart the Missouri invention, it disjoins the way chicken does …

… with a few random strands of “meat” hanging loosely.”

“…UN urges global move to meat and dairy-free diet…”

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

“…Lesser consumption of animal products is necessary to save the world from the worst impacts of climate change..

A global shift towards a vegan diet is vital to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty and the worst impacts of climate change, a UN report said today.

As the global population surges towards a predicted 9.1 billion people by 2050, western tastes for diets rich in meat and dairy products are unsustainable…

… says the report from United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) international panel of sustainable resource management.

It says: “Impacts from agriculture are expected to increase substantially due to population growth increasing consumption of animal products.

Unlike fossil fuels, it is difficult to look for alternatives: people have to eat.

A substantial reduction of impacts would only be possible with a substantial worldwide diet change … away from animal products.”

Professor Edgar Hertwich, the lead author of the report, said: …

…”Animal products cause more damage than [producing] construction minerals such as sand or cement, plastics or metals.

Biomass and crops for animals are as damaging as [burning] fossil fuels.”

The recommendation follows advice last year that a vegetarian diet was better for the planet from Lord Nicholas Stern, former adviser to the Labour government on the economics of climate change.

Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), has also urged people to observe one meat-free day a week to curb carbon emissions.

The panel of experts ranked products, resources, economic activities and transport according to their environmental impacts.

Agriculture was on a par with fossil fuel consumption … because both rise rapidly with increased economic growth, they said.

Ernst von Weizsaecker, an environmental scientist who co-chaired the panel, said: …

…”Rising affluence is triggering a shift in diets towards meat and dairy products -

- livestock now consumes much of the world’s crops …

… and by inference a great deal of freshwater, fertilisers and pesticides.”

“…Government Report Finds Dangerous Residues in Meat…(Of 23 pesticides designated by the EPA and FDA as high risk, FSIS only tests for one)…”

Friday, June 4th, 2010

“…Many food consumers worry about pathogens like E. coli, Salmonella and Listeria in their meat.

But according to a new government report, they should worry more about veterinary drugs, pesticides and heavy metals in their food.

A new Office of Inspector General (OIG) report released last month finds the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) fails to test for many drugs in cattle …

… inadequately tests for others … and fails to recall meat which is clearly contaminated.

“Between July 12, 2007, and March 11, 2008, FSIS found that four carcasses were adulterated with violative levels of veterinary drugs …

… and that the plants involved had released the meat into the food supply.

Although the drugs involved could result in stomach, nerve, or skin problems for consumers, FSIS requested no recall,” says the report.

Drugs cached on the national dinner plate may include antibiotics like penicillin, florfenicol, sulfamethazine and sulfadimethoxine …

… the anti-parasite drug Ivermectin, the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug flunixin and heavy metals says OIG, which oversees Department of Health and Human Services programs.

Of 23 pesticides designated by the EPA and FDA as high risk, FSIS only tests for one says the report …

… in some case because no established action levels are set.

Nor are there action levels for Dioxin, pesticides with cancelled registrations like lindane and fire retardants called PBDEs (Polybrominated diphenyl ethers)

… some of the most worrisome endocrine disruptors.

Pesticides and endocrine disruptors are increasingly linked to the epidemic of childhood ADHD and asthma.

Livestock antibiotics, used to produce weight in livestock with less feed, cause resistance and allergic reactions in people and, some say, weight gain.

Unlike pathogens like E. coli, says the OIG report, residues cannot be cooked away …

… and are sometimes broken into even more harmful compounds when heated.

And how was your dinner?…”

… after Iceland, Norway, and Sweden took similar measures in the past.

Under the newly instated Animal Welfare Commercial Slaughter Code, announced by Agriculture Minister David Carter, commercially killed animals would have to be stunned before slaughter …

“…Comedian Mike King’s agent wanted a $50,000 severance payment from New Zealand Pork to stop his client going “feral”, documents say…”

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

“…Papers released to the Herald on Sunday under the Official Information Act claim celebrity agent David Steele asked for the payment to stop King “going dog” and speaking out against the pork industry.

The claim was allegedly made in a conversation between Steele and NZ Pork marketing manager Hadleigh Smith in February last year.

Three months later King sensationally fronted a documentary exposing cruel pig farming practices.

The papers also revealed King received almost $550,000 during a six-year commercial relationship with the industry board.

Smith said: “I remember the conversation quite clearly - some severance pay would be a good way to stop Mike going ‘dog’, help prevent him from going ‘feral’.

$50,000 was a good number, he indicated.”

Steele’s request is also noted in records from a NZ Pork committee meeting in February.

Yesterday Steele described that version of events as “an absolute crock of s***.”

He did not categorically deny using the words “dog” or “feral” in conversations with NZ Pork…”

“…Mediterranean diet ‘could raise risk of heart attacks’…”

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

“…Eating a Mediterranean diet to boost levels of good cholesterol could in fact be bad for some people, research indicates.

It has long been thought that a diet rich in olive oil, nuts and oily fish is good for health because it can reduce bad cholesterol levels.

However, a study suggests that some heart attack patients may have genetic mutations that mean the diet increases their risk of suffering further cardiac problems.

It found that those at most risk of suffering subsequent heart attacks had large amounts of the high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or ‘good’ cholesterol’, in their blood that destroys unhealthy trans fats in foods such as biscuits and cakes.

They also had more of a protein known as CRP which causes inflammation – suggesting this influences whether good cholesterol protects or endangers individuals.

The findings, published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, could also explain disappointing results from a trial of an experimental drug called torcetrapib designed to increase HDL cholesterol.

Manufacturers Pfizer had to halt it in 2006 due to a surprisingly excessive number of unexplained heart attacks and deaths that were linked with higher levels of good cholesterol…”

how meat is the ‘worst’-protein…(and then there’s the fat….)

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

“…Wow, the numbers are startling.

Americans consume an astonishing amount of protein.

USDA statistics reveal that U.S. men eat as much as 190% of their recommended daily protein allowance …

.. while women eat as much as 160% …

… the great majority of which comes from saturated-fat heavy meat and meat products.

Protein is essential to life; it builds and maintains muscles, bones and skin, and regulates metabolism and digestion.

But the question remains, whether you look at it from the perspective of personal health, or environmental degradation, or cost savings, or animal rights, or veggie activism, or whatever else floats your boat: …

…do we really need to eat all that meat?

I went to the top, to the nation’s most influential nutritionist, Dr. Marion Nestle, professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University, to get her take.

“All proteins are made up of the same amino acids.

ALL. No exceptions,” she reasons.

“The difference between animal and vegetable proteins is in the content of certain amino acids.

If vegetable proteins are mixed, the differences get made up.

Even if they aren’t mixed, all you need to do to get the right amount of low amino acids is to eat more of that food.

There is no ‘need’ for animal proteins at all.”

So, when it comes to protein…if we don’t need animal protein all the time … what other options do we have?

It turns out that beans, legumes, whole grains, greens, nuts and seeds are excellent sources of protein —

— plus they offer the added benefit of fiber (not found in meat), vitamins and minerals.

Here’s some examples of protein found in readily available foods:

Broccoli — 4 grams in 1 cup

Brown Rice — 5 grams in 1 cup

Refried beans — 7 grams in ½ cup

Soymilk — 7 grams in 1 cup

Peas — 8 grams in 1 cup

Tofu — 11 grams in 5 oz

Oat Bran — 16 grams in 1 cup

Lentils — 18 grams in 1 cup

Chickpeas — 18 grams in 1 cup

The key factor, though, is what comes along with the protein.

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, a 6-ounce broiled porterhouse steak is an excellent source of protein — 38 grams worth.

But along for the ride are 44 grams of fat, 16 of them saturated!

That’s almost three-fourths of the recommended daily intake for saturated fat.

The same amount of salmon gives you 34 grams of protein and 18 grams of fat, 4 of them saturated.

A cup of cooked lentils has 18 grams of protein, but under 1 gram of fat!

That pretty much tells the story right there.

It’s what comes along for the ride that we need to play closer attention to.

Indeed, if Americans are consuming nearly double their protein need …

… primarily from meat and meat products with their concomitant high saturated fat levels …

… (not to even get into the hormone-administered meat topic, saved for another post) …

… you can see why the nation is staring down the barrel of an obesity epidemic…”

“…10 Amazingly Smart & Productive Animals Humans Can Learn From…”

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

“.1. Octupi and squids: Cephalopods — octopi, squids and cuttlefish — may be some of the smartest animals in the ocean.

After studying them, scientists have deduced that cephalopods are always trying to stay busy, as they hate being bored.

They use tools, are efficient eaters, and can learn new skills.

2. Dolphins: Dolphins may love humans just as much as humans love dolphins.

The highly collaborative marine mammal is also incredibly intelligent and communicative and may actually be the second-smartest animal in the world ..

… just after humans.

Their brains are 4-5 times larger than other animals’ brains who have similar sized bodies.

They also have a well developed neocortex which helps them process emotion, recognize themselves in a mirror, demonstrate an ability for cultural learning, and understand abstract concepts.

3. Pigeons: Although they’re often associated with dirty, crowded urban environments, pigeons are productive animals with high intelligence.

They have highly developed memories, recognize themselves in a mirror, and can identify even subtle differences between different objects.

4. Pigs: Pigs are known to compensate for their mud-slinging, trough-eating ways by demonstrating high intelligence, but did you know just how smart pigs are?

They’re very social and even emotional animals that can “play” computer and video games at least as well as chimpanzees.

They have an excellent sense of direction and learn from each other …when they’re not trying to trick each other…”

“…World Health Org and UN recommend populations eat plant-based diets…”

Friday, May 21st, 2010

“…”Households should select predominantly plant-based diets rich in a variety of vegetables and fruits, pulses or legumes, and minimally processed starchy staple foods.”

Says who?

Say experts from the World Health Organization and the Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, in a landmark report.

Quoting the report:

“Populations should consume nutritionally adequate and varied diets, based primarily on foods of plant origin with small amounts of added flesh foods.

Households should select predominantly plant-based diets rich in a variety of vegetables and fruits, pulses or legumes, and minimally processed starchy staple foods.

The evidence that such diets will prevent or delay a significant proportion of non-communicable chronic diseases is consistent.

A predominantly plant-based diet has a low energy density, which may protect against obesity.”

And another excellent quote..

“Although two-thirds of the world’s population depends on cereal or tuber-based diets …

… the other one-third consumes significant amounts of animal food products.

The latter group places an undue demand on land, water, and other resources required for intensive food production …

… which makes the typical Western diet not only undesirable from the standpoint of health but also environmentally unsustainable.

If we balance energy intake with the expenditure required for basal metabolism, physical activity, growth, and repair …

… we will find that the dietary quality required for health is essentially the same across population groups.”

Yet it is understood the £1.2 billion system has never led to the arrest of a terrorist -

- and police now use it to target ’sex offenders and football hooligans’.

Police have also used it to produce 14,000 intelligence reports on travellers for ‘future use’.

They can be shared by security services worldwide.

“…The Greens are demanding a new era of openness around scientific experiments involving animals …”

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

“… claiming that public unease is mounting over cross-species research …

… in the wake of the death of calves involved in genetic modification experiments.

Green MP Sue Kedgley says details of experiments being carried out by Crown Research Institute AgResearch are too secret …

… and that approval for research projects is governed by an Animal Ethics committee comprised largely of in-house scientists with a vested interest.

Meetings are not open to the public, there is no publicly available agenda, minutes or reports, and no way of finding out who is on the committee.

But AgResearch has vigorously defended its ethics committees, saying the system is well regulated … and the organisation has nothing to hide.

However, one of its managers says a certain amount of secrecy must surround experiments to protect scientists from the actions of extremist groups.

The secrecy of the process prompted Kedgley to call for a parliamentary select committee inquiry into animal welfare and ethics at AgResearch’s Hamilton campus, Ruakura.

Her call came after it was revealed that genetically modified calves were born with ovaries that grew too large and killed the animals when they were six months old.

The deaths happened last year and were only revealed following inquiries using the Official Information Act.

“We need to look at the whole research programme; how they operate and how we can get greater transparency,” Kedgley says.

“We’re particularly concerned about cross-species research such as putting human genes into animals.

It shouldn’t be left up to a handful of scientists to decide.

There are profound animal welfare and ethical implications.”

Kedgley’s principal concern is that there is no public input …

… and no questioning of whether New Zealanders are comfortable with the research…”

“…Why the Left Has No ” Ethical Vocabulary”…”

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

“…Christine Smallwood’s interview with historian Tony Judt in The Nation ended with a much-too-brief exchange about religion and the left.

Here it is:

‘..Smallwood: I come from a very religious background, and it seems to me that people on the left are so embarrassed about the language of morality that they’ve ceded the ground to the right.’

‘Judt: I totally agree. I think it’s a catastrophe for both sides.

What it means for the left is that it’s got no ethical vocabulary.

What it means for the right is that it smugly supposes that it’s got a monopoly on values.

Both sides are completely wrong.

There used to be a tradition of left-wing ethics, Orwellian if you like, or pre-Orwell.

I’d like to say parenthetically that I come out of a sort of secular dissenting Jewish background …

… but one with some of the same thoughts of the old dissenting churches—Christian, Jewish—of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries …

… in which there was a natural correspondence of social values and ethical criteria.

And the divorce between them has been one of the disastrous results of the last half-century.

I’d love to contribute to re-forming that link.’…”

“…Animal Rights is Terrorism?…”

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

“…Under a relatively new law called the “Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act” (A.E.T.A.), activists engaged in efforts to bring needless suffering to an end for non-human animals inside factory farms, vivisection labs, circuses and the like …

… now potentially face charges as “terrorists” in federal courts … even if their actions are peaceful and First Amendment protected.

Although a pre-existing law from 1992 known as the “Animal Enterprise Protection Act” was initially created to further prosecute and create harsher penalties for activists who use illegal tactics to save lives …

… such as liberating animals from abusive situations .. and causing economic damage to industries that profit from suffering …

… the A.E.T.A. has taken it one step further … and tacked on the label of “terrorism” for such activities.

If labeling a person who actually saves innocent lives a “terrorist” …

… rather than the person who systematically abuses and kills animals for a living seems Orwellian to you …

… the vagueness used in writing this law will be even more unsettling.

Although the law is allegedly intended to curb illegal actions …

… it essentially says that those interfering with the operations of an animal enterprise with the intent of causing economic damage …

… are committing acts of terrorism…”

George Monbiot:..”..I share their despair, but I’m not quite ready to climb the Dark Mountain..”

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

“…Those who defend economic growth often argue that only rich countries can afford to protect the environment.

The bigger the economy, the more money will be available for stopping pollution, investing in new forms of energy, preserving wilderness.

Only the wealthy can live sustainably.

Anyone who has watched the emerging horror in the Gulf of Mexico in the past few days has cause to doubt this.

The world’s richest country decided not to impose the rules that might have prevented the Deepwater Horizon oil spill …

… arguing that these would impede the pursuit of greater wealth.

Economic growth, and the demand for oil that it propelled, drove companies to drill in difficult and risky places.

But we needn’t rely on this event to dismiss the cornucopians’ thesis as self-serving nonsense.

A new paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences calculates deforestation rates between 2000 and 2005 in the countries with the largest areas of forest cover.

The nation with the lowest rate was the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The nation with the highest, caused by a combination of logging and fire, was the United States.

Loss of forest cover there (6% of its own forests in five years) was almost twice as fast as in Indonesia and 10 times as fast as in the DRC.

Why?

Because those poorer countries have less money to invest in opening up remote places … and felling trees.

The wealthy nations are plundering not only their own resources.

The environmental disasters caused by the oil industry in Ecuador and Nigeria are not driven by Ecuadorian or Nigerian demand …

.. but by the thirst for oil in richer nations.

Deforestation in Indonesia is driven by the rich world’s demand for palm oil and timber … in Brazil by our hunger for timber and animal feed.

The Guardian’s carbon calculator reveals that the UK has greatly underestimated the climate impacts of our consumption.

The reason is that official figures don’t count outsourced emissions: the greenhouse gases produced by other countries manufacturing goods for our markets.

Another recent paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that the UK imports a net 253m tonnes of carbon dioxide …

… embodied in the goods it buys.

When this is taken into account, we find that far from cutting emissions since 1990, as the last government claimed, we have increased them.

Wealth wrecks the environment.

So the Dark Mountain Project, whose ideas are spreading rapidly through the environment movement, is worth examining.

It contends that “capitalism has absorbed the greens”.

Instead of seeking to protect the natural world from the impact of humans, the project claims that environmentalists now work on “sustaining human civilisation at the comfort level which the world’s rich people – us – feel is their right”.

Today’s greens, it charges, seek to sustain the culture that knackers the planet .. demanding only that we replace old, polluting technologies with new ones –

- wind farms, solar arrays, wave machines – that wreck even more of the world’s wild places.

They have lost their feelings for nature … reducing the problem to an engineering challenge.

They’ve forgotten that they are supposed to be defending the biosphere: …

… instead they are trying to save industrial civilisation.

That task, Paul Kingsnorth – a co-founder of Dark Mountain – believes, is futile:

..”The civilisation we are a part of is hitting the buffers at full speed, and it is too late to stop it.”

Nor can we bargain with it, as “the economic system we rely upon cannot be tamed without collapsing, for it relies upon … growth in order to function”.

Instead of trying to reduce the impacts of our civilisation, we should “start thinking about how we are going to live through its fall, and what we can learn from its collapse …

Our task is to negotiate the coming descent as best we can … whilst creating new myths which put humanity in its proper place”.

Though a fair bit of this takes aim at my writing and the ideas I champion … I recognise the truth in it.

Something has been lost along the way…”

“…Industrial meat comes with antibiotics and endocrine disruptors…”

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

“…A few years ago, scientists released one of the first studies to examine how diet can affect your exposure to toxic substances.

In that case, researchers had a group of Seattle schoolchildren eat an organic diet for five days a week.

Almost immediately, pesticide levels in the children’s bodies dropped to almost undetectable levels —

– and returned to “normal” after they resumed eating a conventional diet.

Now, a group of Korean scientists have looked at what kind of toxins disappear when research subjects stopped eating conventional meat:

‘..People who adopted a vegetarian diet for just five days show reduced levels of toxic chemicals in their bodies.

In particular, levels of hormone disrupting chemicals and antibiotics used in livestock were lower after the five-day vegetarian program.

The pilot study suggests that people may be able reduce their exposure to potentially dangerous chemicals through dietary choices …

… such as limiting consumption of animal products like meats and dairy..’.

Whoa….”

“…Chocolate, red wine and coffee not on healthy heart list…”

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

“…Stop kidding yourself, The Australian Heart Foundation says, there is no cardiovascular health benefit from eating chocolate or drinking red wine.

Coffee was another popular treat that also contained antioxidants, the foundation said, ensuring it was commonly referred to as part of a heart healthy diet.

Susan Anderson, the Heart Foundation’s national director of healthy weight, said a review of more that 100 scientific papers found this was not the case.

The message to chocolate, wine and coffee connoisseurs was that any cardiovascular benefit was more a case of wishful thinking.

“Chocolate, coffee and red wine are okay as part of a balanced diet,” Ms Anderson said in a statement today.

“But these findings confirm that if you’re consuming them thinking you’re reducing your risk of heart disease then think again.

“The best way to get enough antioxidants …

… is to eat a variety of plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruit, legumes, wholegrain breads and cereals, nuts and seeds every day.”

“…Although it’s often assumed that only humans show their feelings through facial expressions …

… researchers have found in a new study that mice make facial expressions that reflect pain.

As the scientific community increasingly rejects entrenched older views of animals as unfeeling, robot-like organisms …

The new study proposes a mouse “grimace scale” as a standardized way to measure pain based on facial expressions in mice.

The findings are described in the May 9 advance online issue of the research journal Nature Methods.
